Amid a surge in unemployment claims following the devastating wildfires in the western region of Maui, officials in Hawaii are urging tourists to visit Maui and support the local economy.

While West Maui is currently off limits to visitors until at least October 17 as search and recovery operations continue in the devastated town of Lahaina, Governor Josh Green’s latest emergency proclamation encourages tourists to explore other areas of Maui.

Senator Brian Schatz has expressed concern over the increase in furloughs and layoffs, noting that the misconception that the entire island is closed is causing people to lose their jobs.

Data from the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism reveals that unemployment claims in Maui have skyrocketed from 130 prior to the fires to 4,449 as of last week.

Schatz urges tourists to consider visiting South Maui, stating in a social media post, “If you are planning a trip to Wailea or Kihei, don’t cancel. If you want to come to Hawaii, please consider South Maui.”

Green emphasized that the affected area is limited to West Maui and assured that the rest of the island and the state are safe. He urged tourists to support the local economy and aid in the recovery efforts during a press conference with President Joe Biden.

The wildfires have tragically claimed at least 115 lives and caused billions of dollars in property damage. Moody’s estimated economic losses ranging from $4 billion to $6 billion, considering the physical infrastructure damage. However, this estimate does not account for the expected impact on Hawaii’s overall gross domestic product, government spending on response efforts, and the social costs.

Moody’s also highlighted that the rebuilding process will contribute to the economic losses due to inflation during the years-long recovery, the high cost of labor in the construction industry, and the expenses associated with goods in Maui’s remote location.
