Hawaii Pacific Health Eases Masking Policy at Its Facilities

Hawaii Pacific Health has announced that as of today, the wearing of masks will be optional at all its medical facilities and clinics except for designated high-risk patient care areas. Requiring masks was implemented at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic but, according to HPH, will no longer be mandatory for staff, visitors, or patients in public areas such as hallways, elevators, lobbies, and cafeterias which are not within patient care areas. However, those who still prefer to wear masks in optional-masking zones may continue to do so. The new masking policy will be posted at all HPH facilities. HPH currently runs Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, alongside Pali Momi and Straub on Oahu. While masks will still be required in intensive care units and areas serving immunocompromised patients, HPH continues to monitor COVID-19 trends and will adjust its policy accordingly. Patients displaying respiratory illness symptoms such as fever, coughing, and runny nose must wear masks, with visitors showing symptoms of illness not permitted access to HPH facilities. Exceptions in mask-required areas are made for children under two and people with a clinical, safety-related reason for not wearing a mask.
