The Hawaii Department of Health is urging residents to prioritize their health by getting vaccinated with the updated COVID-19 vaccines. These vaccines have been specifically designed to combat the prevalent XBB lineages of the omicron variant, which are responsible for the majority of COVID-19 cases in Hawaii.
Recently authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the updated COVID vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna have received a recommendation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for all individuals aged 6 months and older.
In a news release, State Health Director Dr. Kenneth S. Fink emphasized the importance of these new vaccines, stating, “The authorization of the new 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccines comes at a good time. We are witnessing a rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. By opting for the new 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine, you are actively contributing to the reduction of disease transmission within our communities. This becomes even more crucial as we enter the holiday season.”
The Department of Health assures that these vaccines will be accessible through conventional channels and will be covered by health insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare. Moreover, the federal Bridge Access Program offers free COVID vaccines to uninsured or underinsured adults through various retail pharmacy chains, healthcare providers, and federally supported health centers.
DOH is expecting shipments of the vaccines to arrive soon, and they will be distributed by different providers at different times. To locate available COVID-19 vaccines, visit vaccines.gov.
