‘Hank the Tank’, a 500-Pound Bear Responsible for Break-Ins, Captured in California

  • Authorities in California have successfully apprehended a 500-pound black bear that was responsible for 21 home break-ins.
  • The bear earned the nickname “Hank the Tank” in 2022, after a series of property damage incidents.
  • The bear will now be relocated to a wildlife sanctuary in Colorado, as confirmed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

California wildlife officials have successfully captured a 500-pound bear that had been causing havoc in the Lake Tahoe area since 2022.

In 2022, the bear was given the moniker “Hank the Tank” by locals and gained notoriety when the South Lake Tahoe Police had to address multiple calls urging them not to euthanize the bear, according to SFGATE, a San Francisco-based news website.

In a February 2022 report, The New York Times revealed that the bear had lost its fear of humans and could not be deterred by police interventions such as paintballs, bean bags, sirens, and stun guns.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that the bear, which is female, has been identified through DNA evidence as the perpetrator of at least 21 home break-ins and significant property damage.

On Friday, biologists successfully captured the bear and have decided to relocate her to a wildlife sanctuary in Colorado, as outlined in their official statement.

The bear’s three cubs, who accompanied her during recent home break-ins, will be transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Sonoma County, California, with the hope that they can unlearn the negative behaviors they acquired from their mother and eventually be released back into the wild, the agency explained.

While the bear captured on Friday by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has been designated as “bear 64F,” it is worth noting that this specific bear is one of several bears that the public has associated with the name “Hank the Tank.” Most of the reported damage caused by “Hank the Tank” occurred during the winter, a consequence of the climate crisis and the resulting scarcity of food in the area, leading bears to abandon hibernation.
