Breaking NCAA Football History: Woman Makes Record-Breaking Debut
Haley Van Voorhis, an accomplished safety from Shenandoah University’s Division-III football team, has made history by becoming the first non-kicker female player to compete in an NCAA football game.
During the game against Juniata, Van Voorhis, measuring 5-foot-6 and weighing 145 pounds, joined the action in the first quarter with Shenandoah leading by a commanding 26 points.
In a remarkable display of skill, this junior player executed a quarterback hurry on a vital third down.
Reflecting on her achievement, Van Voorhis expressed, “It’s an extraordinary moment for me. Showcasing the abilities of women and proving what I can do is paramount. The impossible has now become possible, and I’m incredibly thrilled about it,” she shared in an interview with the Washington Post.
Originating from Plains, Virginia, Van Voorhis initially honed her skills on Shenandoah University’s junior varsity team before ascending to the varsity roster this season. Notably, she earned all-state honorable mention recognition as a standout player on her high school’s football team at Christchurch in 2019, with her senior season subsequently disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Van Voorhis’s athletic pursuits extend beyond football. She is also an accomplished sprinter on Shenandoah’s track and field team.
Shenandoah University secured an impressive 48-7 victory against Juniata, improving their season record to 2-1.
It’s worth noting that female kickers have previously made strides in college football. In 2003, Katie Hnida became the first woman to score in an NCAA Division I-A football game as the placekicker for New Mexico. Additionally, Sarah Fuller made headlines in 2020 by becoming the first woman to score in a Power 5 football game as the kicker for Vanderbilt.
Reflecting on her journey, Fuller shared, “I find it truly remarkable that I’ve been given this opportunity. My primary aim is to inspire young girls out there, especially during times of struggle in sports. I’m immensely grateful that I persevered, as it has provided me with countless opportunities. Sports have introduced me to remarkable individuals, and I want to convey the message that with determination, the possibilities are endless.”
Fuller later returned to her role as the goalkeeper for Vanderbilt University’s women’s soccer team.
