Gwyneth Paltrow voluntarily purchases all her own Goop products, despite the possibility of receiving them for free.
In an interview published on Wednesday by Bustle, the Academy Award-winning actress explained that she abstains from accepting freebies from her health and wellness brand due to a belief rooted in Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism she embraced after her conversion to Judaism in 2014.
Paltrow referred to a concept from Kabbalah called “Bread of Shame,” which asserts that receiving things without earning them ultimately diminishes their value and can have corruptive effects. Despite receiving a discount on her purchases, Paltrow has never requested complimentary products because she prefers to pay for them, recognizing the importance of earning what she receives.
Since its inception as a nutritional newsletter in 2008, Goop, founded by Paltrow, has evolved into an e-commerce platform offering a range of products including vitamins, fashion items, household goods, and even a skincare line launched in 2016.
Paltrow and Goop have faced criticism in the past for endorsing potentially harmful health advice and selling unconventional products such as a candle with a supposed vagina scent. Regarding the latter, Paltrow clarified in an Instagram Story on August 30 that the intention behind the candle was not to replicate the scent of any specific individual, but rather to make a bold feminist statement.
Insider reached out to representatives for Paltrow and Goop outside of regular business hours but did not receive an immediate response.
