ATHENS, Greece (AP) – Travelers planning to visit Greece’s popular island destinations should take note of possible disruptions next week as ferry crews have announced a 24-hour strike on September 13th. The crews cite concerns related to safety and labor issues as the reason for the strike.

The decision to go on strike was made by the PNO union in response to a recent tragic incident in Greece’s main port of Piraeus, where a passenger drowned after being pushed into the sea by a crew member.

Although the union did not directly link the strike to the drowning, the incident has caused widespread anger and condemnation throughout Greece.

In a statement, the PNO union expressed concern over the improper implementation of shipping and harbor safety regulations, stating that crew members are overworked and that ferry sailing schedules are unreasonable, creating serious safety concerns.

The union has called on the government to take immediate action to protect human life at sea.

In response to the drowning incident, an island ferry captain and three crew members have been arrested and charged with homicide. Video footage of the incident shows the crew member shoving the late passenger off the loading ramp into the churning waters, while no effort was made to save him.

An investigation is underway to examine the response of harbor authorities to the incident, and two senior Piraeus port police officers have been suspended.
