The new regulations require visitors to book a time slot in advance using the official Acropolis website. Similar visitor caps may be implemented at other popular attractions and historical sites from April next year. The number of visitors will vary depending on the time, with the busiest hours being before midday.
Italy’s Trentino Alto Adige region has also introduced rules to manage overtourism. They limit the number of overnight guests to 2019 levels and prohibit the opening of new guest houses, Airbnbs, or hotels unless an existing one closes down. Arnold Schuler, the minister for tourism, explained that the region has reached its visitor capacity. Access to the Alpe di Siusi, an Alpine meadow, has been restricted, allowing only public transport during certain hours. Similarly, Japan’s Iriomote Island has implemented a cap of 1,200 tourists per day to protect its endangered indigenous wildcat. All of these measures aim to strike a balance between tourism and safeguarding these unique destinations.
