`Gran Turismo’ Outperforms `Barbie’ in Weekend Box Office Showdown

“Gran Turismo” debuted with $17.3 million this weekend, emerging as the top-grossing film in North America. While it may not be an explosive start, director Neill Blomkamp’s adaptation of the beloved video game certainly has a solid foundation.

The movie follows the journey of Jann Mardenborough, a real-life teenage gamer who transitions into a professional race car driver. It narrowly surpassed “Barbie,” which earned $17.1 million in its sixth week at the box office, according to Comscore.

These initial box office estimates will be updated on Monday with final numbers. It’s worth noting that Sunday’s National Cinema Day, where ticket prices were reduced to $4, impacted this weekend’s results.

“Blue Beetle” secured the third spot after claiming the top position last weekend, earning $12.7 million from Friday to Sunday.

“Oppenheimer” claimed the fourth position, generating $9 million in its sixth week. It was followed by “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” which accumulated $6.1 million in its fourth week.

“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” are both amassing impressive cumulative totals. Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has surpassed $594 million domestically and $1.34 billion worldwide. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” has exceeded $300 million domestically and $777 million worldwide.

Completing the top 10 domestic releases are “Meg 2: The Trench” ($5.1 million), “Strays” ($4.6 million), “Retribution” ($3.3 million), “The Hill” ($2.5 million), and “Haunted Mansion” ($2.1 million).

The total three-day box office revenue for the weekend amounted to an estimated $94.1 million. According to Comscore, the year-to-date total has reached $6.622 billion, representing a 25% increase compared to the previous year.
