‘Gran Turismo’ Outpaces ‘Barbie’ in Weekend Box Office Ratings

The highly anticipated film “Gran Turismo” had a solid opening weekend, grossing $17.3 million and taking the top spot at the North American box office. Directed by Neill Blomkamp, the movie is an adaptation of the popular video game and stars Jann Mardenborough as a real-life teenage gamer who goes on to become a professional race car driver. It narrowly edged out the long-running film “Barbie,” which brought in $17.1 million in its sixth weekend.

It’s worth noting that these initial box office estimates may be revised on Monday due to National Cinema Day, where ticket prices were reduced to $4 at many theaters. However, “Gran Turismo” still made an impressive debut.

In third place for the weekend was “Blue Beetle,” which had opened in first place the previous week and earned $12.7 million from Friday to Sunday. Following closely behind was “Oppenheimer,” which made $9 million in its sixth week. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” rounded out the top five with $6.1 million in its fourth week.

Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” continue to have strong cumulative totals, with “Barbie” surpassing $594 million domestically and $1.34 billion worldwide, while “Oppenheimer” has earned over $300 million domestically and $777 million worldwide. These films have undoubtedly left a significant impact on the box office.

The remaining films in the top 10 domestic releases were “Meg 2: The Trench” with $5.1 million, “Strays” with $4.6 million, “Retribution” with $3.3 million, “The Hill” with $2.5 million, and “Haunted Mansion” with $2.1 million.

This weekend’s total box office earnings amounted to an estimated $94.1 million. Overall, the year-to-date total box office revenue stands at $6.622 billion, which marks a 25% increase compared to the same period last year, according to Comscore.
