New York Governor Kathy Hochul is currently engaged in a contentious dispute with New York City Mayor Eric Adams regarding the legality of foie gras, a debatable but opulent type of duck liver. Mayor Adams and his administration have been attempting to enforce a ban on foie gras due to concerns about animal rights. The production of foie gras involves the force-feeding of ducks at specialized farms located outside of the city.
Former Mayor Bill de Blasio initially signed the ban in 2019, and it was set to take effect in November 2022. However, Governor Hochul’s state Department of Agriculture and Markets intervened and instructed the city not to implement the ban. Supporters of the state government’s action argue that New York City authorities were overstepping their bounds by attempting to regulate farms located approximately 100 miles away from the city. Conversely, proponents of the ban assert that the city should have the freedom to regulate itself, as reported by Politico.
Earlier this month, city officials achieved their first victory when a county judge invalidated the state’s order that prevented the enforcement of the ban. The opposition has now filed an appeal against the decision.
Voters for Animal Rights, a lobbying group that played a key role in convincing the city to pass the original ban, claims that state officials are deliberately prolonging the process. As long as litigation continues, existing farms are allowed to continue producing foie gras. “They just want to drag this out as long as possible to keep profiting for as long as possible,” stated Bryan Pease, the attorney representing Voters for Animal Rights, in an interview with Politico. He further argued that the state cannot maintain its unfounded belief that it can strike down laws wherever it wishes, simply because those laws might indirectly impact a farm somewhere in Upstate New York. According to Pease, if that were the case, then the banning of any product would be impossible.
Governor Hochul’s office has not yet responded to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
