Governor Green takes action by signing housing emergency proclamation

Today, Governor Josh Green took a significant step by signing an emergency proclamation aimed at addressing the housing crisis in Hawaii. Green confidently asserts that the execution of this proclamation will lead to a significant drop in housing prices, benefiting residents across the state. As part of the new working group, the Sierra Club, a renowned environmental organization, will have representation to ensure that environmental concerns are accounted for throughout the decision-making process.

The crafting of this emergency proclamation involved extensive consultation with various stakeholders, including over 200 developers, environmentalists, Native Hawaiians, and other interested parties. Multiple perspectives were taken into consideration to develop a comprehensive approach that addresses the diverse needs of the community.

Hawaii faces an urgent need for 50,000 homes over the next five years across the islands. Currently, housing comprises 38% of household spending, with housing prices having skyrocketed by 1,200% in the past 45 years, while income has only increased by 600%. Alarming statistics reveal that in the previous year, 20% of residents left Hawaii daily, and for the first time in state history, more Native Hawaiians are residing on the mainland. Governor Green passionately acknowledges that the loss of Hawaiian children and culture due to the housing crisis is a significant concern for the state.
