Government shutdown fears grow as Freedom Caucus stokes the flames in Congress’ heated spending battle

The House Freedom Caucus, a conservative group, is demanding more from GOP leadership before supporting a stopgap spending extension to avoid a government shutdown. Lawmakers have only passed one of the 12 promised appropriations bills, making it necessary to implement a “continuing resolution” (CR) to buy more time for negotiations. However, the Freedom Caucus opposes a “clean” CR, as it believes it would continue Democratic spending priorities without holding the Biden Administration accountable. Instead, they want measures on border security, government weaponization, and reversing the administration’s “woke” military policies in exchange for passing a bill. This sets up a battle between the Freedom Caucus and House Republican leadership, who have already agreed to lower spending levels. The demands are unlikely to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate. Along with their requirements, the Freedom Caucus is against additional funding for Ukraine in any supplemental bill.
