GOP retains control of Wisconsin Assembly seat as Paul Melotik wins special election

In a special election on Tuesday, Republican Paul Melotik emerged victorious over Democrat Bob Tatterson to secure the vacant Assembly seat representing Milwaukee’s north suburbs. With this win, Melotik ensures that the district remains in the hands of the GOP, maintaining the Republican majority in the Assembly at 64-35. Although they are two seats short of a supermajority, which would grant them the ability to override a governor’s veto, Republicans could potentially achieve a supermajority if two or more Democrats are absent.

The Assembly seat became available after Republican Dan Knodl won a special election and is currently serving in the state Senate. Knodl’s victory earlier this year gave Republicans a commanding 22-11 supermajority in the Senate, empowering them to remove state officials who have been impeached in the Assembly.

Melotik, a co-owner of multiple businesses and a former member of the Ozaukee County and Town of Grafton government, emerged as the victor in the election. Tatterson, a retired engineer and advisor to startup businesses, graciously conceded defeat once the results were tallied.

Prior to his election to the Senate, Knodl had defeated Tatterson in a reelection bid for his Assembly seat in November.

In an effort to improve religious freedom during emergencies, Wisconsin Republicans have proposed an amendment to prevent government agencies from closing churches. This development highlights the party’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and liberties of citizens.

Melotik, who currently chairs the finance committee in Ozaukee County, expressed his interest in securing a position on the Legislature’s budget-writing Joint Finance Committee. This sought-after role would allow him to play a significant role in shaping the state’s financial decisions.
