GOP expresses concerns over proposed reduction in military aid

Ukrainian politician says Republican debate comments on withdrawing support 'concerning'

In response to statements made during the inaugural debate of Republican presidential candidates, Ukrainian lawmaker Lesia Vasylenko expressed concern about some U.S. politicians’ claims to reduce support to Ukraine. Vasylenko emphasized the significance of the United States as the strongest supporter of democracy and the foundation for democratic values.

The issue of U.S. support for Ukraine has created a division among the leading GOP contenders. Vivek Ramaswamy, an outspoken entrepreneur and political newcomer, criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine, viewing it as “disastrous” and distracting from domestic issues. However, opponent Nikki Haley, a former ambassador to the United Nations, advocated for providing equipment and ammunition to Ukraine.

Vasylenko stressed Ukraine’s collaboration with both Republicans and Democrats to ensure comprehensive support. She highlighted that Ukraine is relying on its own resources, especially human resources, to fight for democracy. However, Vasylenko emphasized the need for sufficient weapons, fighter jets, and long-range missiles to achieve victory.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the United States has provided over $75 billion in aid to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022. The U.S. remains the largest military assistance provider to Ukraine, committing approximately $43 billion. In comparison, the U.K. has contributed £4.6 billion ($5.81 billion), and the European Union has supplied around 5.6 billion euros ($6.06 billion), marking its first approval for lethal weapons provision to a third country.

Here's why Ukraine wants more big ticket Western-made weapons

The U.S. has supplied Ukraine with drones, aircraft, ammunition, and heavy artillery. However, officials from the U.K. and U.S. caused controversy by suggesting Ukraine should show more “gratitude” for the provision of weaponry at a NATO summit. Ukraine launched a counteroffensive operation in Russia-occupied territories, but progress has been challenging. The acquisition of U.S.-made weapons, including F-16 jets and cluster munitions, is expected to bolster Ukraine’s advancement.

Vasylenko highlighted the need to provide Ukraine with more weapons, ammunition, and means of protecting its skies from Russia’s aerial attacks. She acknowledged that some territories under Russian control remain particularly difficult to liberate.
