Google to Remove Canadian News Sites from Search Engines within the Country

In response to a new law requiring online platforms to pay news outlets for their content, Google has announced plans to remove links to Canadian news sites from its search engines in the country.

According to Kent Walker, Google’s president of global affairs, the law is “unworkable,” leading the company to make the “difficult decision” to remove links to Canadian news from Google Search, Google News, and other products in Canada when the law is enacted. Walker argues that the Online News Act introduces uncertainty and exposes Google to unlimited financial liability for facilitating Canadians’ access to news from Canadian publishers.

“We have consistently expressed our belief that this approach is not the right way to support journalism in Canada and that it may lead to significant changes in our products,” Walker said.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, also stated last week that it will block news content on its platforms in Canada in compliance with the new law.

Both Google and Meta have expressed disappointment in the situation and the impact it will have, emphasizing the importance of transparency with Canadian publishers and users.
