Golden Rules set to deliver big prize for affordable fee in horse racing

Golden Rules, purchased for a mere 6,000 guineas in October 2021, appears to be the frontrunner to claim the £81,000 top prize in the Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on Saturday. Since the final declarations on Thursday, there has been a significant rise in support for Golden Rules, with odds shifting from 7-1 to around 3-1.

Previously under the guidance of John Gosden, Deborah Faulkner’s gelding secured a respectable fourth place, finishing two lengths behind the winner in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting in June 2021. After a 638-day absence from the track, he made a triumphant debut for his new stable at Kempton in March.

Although he only carries a 3lb higher weight on Saturday, the form appears less solid as Oisin Murphy was given an effortless lead by his competitors, which he took full advantage of. It’s highly unlikely that Golden Rules will enjoy such comfortable circumstances in one of the most fiercely contested staying handicaps of the season. While his previous form suggests a strong possibility of success, several opponents have equally compelling claims.

Adjuvant, with Billy Loughnane’s 3lb claim, and Zoffee, the runner-up in the Chester Cup, both warrant consideration. However, considering the probable odds, Post Impressionist (2.05) might be the wisest bet, currently priced at around 6-1.

Last season, William Haggas’s four-year-old demonstrated consistent improvement, culminating in a career-best performance to secure a handicap victory at York. This success hinted at even greater potential this year, with the step up to two miles likely to suit him well.

Newcastle 12.20: Lethal Levi and Magical Spirit had similar form at York in May, but with a previous win on Tapeta, Kevin Ryan’s runner holds the edge.

Newmarket 12.40: Charlie Appleby’s Star Of Mystery convincingly triumphed at Haydock two weeks ago and should handle the step up to Listed company with ease.

Newcastle 12.55: Brad The Brief, the highest-rated contender, has a history of performing well after a break.
