Australia’s women’s kayak team dominated the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in London, securing a gold medal in the team event. The challenging conditions at the Lee Valley White Water Centre did not deter sisters Jessica and Noemie Fox (NSW) and Tasmanian Kate Eckhardt, who were one of only two K1 teams to avoid penalties. They achieved a blistering time of 108.62 to win the gold medal. Spain, with a single touch of a gate, took second place, while Great Britain, although having the fastest raw time, was relegated to third due to two gate touches. The Australian trio of Noemie Fox, Kate Eckhardt, and Jessica Fox celebrated their victory on the podium. This win was particularly special for Noemie Fox, as she had previously won the canoe event in 2019. She expressed her excitement about being the first Australian team to win the kayak event and emphasized the team’s camaraderie, hard work, and inspiration. Despite a disappointing run in the women’s C1 team event, where they finished last due to a missed gate and a 50-second penalty, the team regrouped and made a successful comeback in the kayak event. Jessica Fox, who had previously won silver in the K1 at the London 2012 Olympics, appreciated the opportunity to compete alongside her fellow Australians rather than against them. The Canoe Slalom World Championships, which also serve as qualifiers for the Paris Olympics, will continue with heats in the men’s and women’s C1 events. In the team events, Britain, France, and the Czech Republic also secured gold medals. Australia’s men’s canoe team finished 10th, while the kayak team placed ninth.
