Giraffe Named Twiga Passes Away at 31 in a Texas Zoo

Twiga, a 31-year-old giraffe, passed away at the Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin, Texas over the weekend. This makes her one of the oldest giraffes in human care. Twiga, a Masai giraffe, was born in the Los Angeles Zoo and later moved to the Racine Zoo in Wisconsin before arriving at the Ellen Trout Zoo in 2008. Director Gordon Henley described her as a guiding presence to the other giraffes and highlighted the care and attention she received from the zoo staff and veterinarian. Despite showing signs of her age, Twiga received a lot of TLC. While giraffes typically have a life expectancy of around 25 to 26 years, Twiga lived a long and fulfilling life. Henley expressed the sadness felt by the zoo upon her passing, acknowledging that they were aware it was approaching but that it still didn’t make it any easier. Twiga joins the ranks of other giraffes such as Ursula from the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden and Mutangi from the Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Australia who also lived into their early 30s before passing away.
