MANILA, Philippines–Gilas Pilipinas suffers first loss in Asian Games Women’s Basketball Tournament

Gilas Pilipinas, the women’s basketball team, faced a formidable opponent in their first loss at the 19th Asian Games. Japan’s team displayed exceptional skills and coordination, securing a convincing 96-59 victory over the Philippines.

Despite their efforts, Gilas Pilipinas struggled to overcome an error-filled first quarter, giving the Japanese team an early advantage. Japan’s dominance continued throughout the game, maintaining a comfortable lead and ultimately securing the win.

Janine Pontejos scored 13 points for Gilas Pilipinas, while Chack Cabinbin and Jack Danielle Animam contributed nine points each. Despite their efforts, the team fell short as Japan’s cohesive gameplay and exceptional shooting led them to a perfect 3-0 record in their group.

Although Gilas Pilipinas showed resilience in the second quarter, scoring 12 points against Japan’s 15, the gap was too significant to overcome. Additionally, Afril Bernardino suffered a minor injury to her left leg, prompting the team to prioritize preparation for the upcoming quarterfinals.

With dominant wins against Kazakhstan and Hong Kong, Gilas Pilipinas is well-positioned to secure a spot in the final eight. They will return to action on Monday against an opponent yet to be determined.
