MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas Women struggled to find answers against Chinese Taipei-B in the final period, ultimately losing to the hosts, 94-83, in the 42nd William Jones Cup on Monday night.
Gilas Pilipinas went cold as Taipei-B caught fire in the final quarter, sinking four three-pointers to secure the victory at Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium.
Afril Bernardino scored 22 points, while Jack Animam added 18 in the losing effort. This loss puts the Philippines at a 1-2 record, currently in fifth place in the tournament. National coach Pat Aquino is using this tournament to prepare his team for the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in September.
Janine Pontejos contributed 11 points, and Jhaz Joson, who was the star of Gilas’ win over Iran the previous night, added nine more. Rookie Kacey dela Rosa, who had scored in double digits in the team’s first two games, was held to just four points.
Ting Tai and Yi Wen Jhang led Chinese Taipei-B with 19 and 17 points, respectively, making key plays that kept their team in the lead until the final buzzer, snapping their two-game losing streak.
Up next for the Nationals is a match against the 2-1 Busan BNK Sum of the Women’s Korean Basketball League on Tuesday, followed by a game against the 3-0 Chanson V-Magic of the Women’s Japan Basketball League on Wednesday.
