Get Ready for a Spectacular ‘Ring of Fire’ Eclipse: Exploring the Rare Phenomenon Approaching the US

Americans have the chance to witness a rare solar event this weekend, with a “ring of fire” eclipse expected to occur on October 14. National Geographic editor and space expert Allie Yang explained in an email to Fox News Digital that this annular solar eclipse will be visible in the western states of Oregon, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, and certain parts of California, Idaho, Colorado, and Arizona. The eclipse happens when the moon passes in front of the sun and appears slightly smaller, creating a “sliver of sun in the shape of a ring” for those in the right location at the right time. While this type of eclipse is not extremely rare, it is uncommon for the eclipse path to cross the United States. The last “ring of fire” eclipse was seen in the U.S. in 2012 and the next one won’t be visible until 2039. It’s crucial to protect your eyes while viewing eclipses, as even a small sliver of sun can cause irreversible damage. Yang recommends using ISO-certified eclipse glasses or indirect viewing methods like pinhole projection. Additionally, eclipses offer a multisensory experience, allowing us to hear nighttime animals, feel the change in temperature, and witness the impact on radio and GPS signals. Scientists will gather data on temperature, pressure, and ionization by launching rockets and balloons before, during, and after the eclipse, which will inform future research.
