Georgia Teacher Katie Rinder Dismissed for Sharing Book on Gender with Students

A decision to terminate the employment of an elementary school teacher from Georgia has been upheld by the Cobb County School Board of Education. Katie Rinderle was fired after reading a children’s book on gender identity to her fifth-grade class. The board voted 4-3 along party lines, rejecting a tribunal’s decision that she should not be fired. Rinderle read the book, titled “My Shadow Is Purple,” by Scott Stuart, to her class in March. Although some parents complained, Rinderle had received support for the lesson as well. The Cobb County School District accused her of violating their policies on teaching controversial issues. Rinderle, who had 10 years of teaching experience, was issued an official notice of termination on June 6.
