Oct. 12 (UPI) — Donors have raised over $350,000 to support legendary gymnast Mary Lou Retton, who is battling a rare and life-threatening form of pneumonia. The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee is also planning to provide financial assistance.
McKenna Kelley, one of Retton’s daughters, shared that the five-time Olympic medalist has been diagnosed with a very rare form of pneumonia and is currently in intensive care fighting for her life. She is unable to breathe on her own and has been in the ICU for over a week.
Kelley, concerned about her uninsured mother, has started a fundraiser on spotfund.com. The initial goal was set at $50,000, but the fund has now surpassed $400,000 with over 6,600 donations. One generous donor contributed $50,000 to the cause.
The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee has taken action upon learning about Retton’s condition. They are expediting the application process to provide financial assistance to her family. Representatives from the committee have reached out to offer their support.
Kelley provided an update on Wednesday stating that Retton, aged 55, is receiving excellent medical care and is continuing to fight. Another one of Retton’s children, Shayla Kelley Schrepfer, also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support their mother has received in an Instagram post.
Kelley Schrepfer mentioned in a video that Retton is still fighting and that the recovery process will be gradual and challenging.
