Gavin Newsom Reacts to School Board’s Denial of Harvey Milk Classroom Material.

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has criticized three Southern California school board members who blocked the approval of an updated social studies curriculum due to objections about gay rights icon Harvey Milk. The board members faced criticism for referring to Milk as a “pedophile” and objected to his inclusion as “activism”. Newsom tweeted his opposition to this behavior, stating that “this isn’t Texas or Florida. In the Golden State, our kids have the freedom to learn,” and warning the board to “stay tuned” for more information. Critics have accused the board members of whitewashing history and erasing marginalized groups, with board member Allison Barclay arguing that Milk was a historical figure who “got the ball rolling” on advocating for federally protected classes of people. The 3-2 vote against the curriculum approved by the state could leave the Temecula Valley School District in breach of California laws on textbook compliancy. Milk was assassinated in 1978 and became one of the first openly gay men to be elected to public office, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He is mentioned only in supplemental materials, not the main textbook.
