Game Recap: Dominant Victory in Week 7 against Washington

*Safety Jason Pinnock recorded his first sack of the season, an impressive eight-yard takedown. This marks his first sack since his outstanding performance against Houston in 2022, where he had 1.5 sacks.

*Impressive rookie Deonte Banks made a mark with his first career interception, returning it for a solid six yards.

*Quarterback Tyrod Taylor continued to shine in the absence of the injured Daniel Jones (neck). Taylor displayed his skills by completing 18 of 29 passes for 279 yards, with touchdowns to Darren Waller and Saquon Barkley. With no interceptions and a passer rating of 116.9, Taylor showcased his ability. Despite being sacked four times, Taylor also managed to rush for 25 yards on eight carries.

*Taylor had an impressive 20-yard run, his longest since his outstanding 32-yard run against Philadelphia on Dec. 11, 2022.

*Darren Waller stole the show with an outstanding performance, leading the Giants with seven receptions for a season-high 98 yards. His impressive 27-yard reception was the highlight of the game. Waller also contributed a 12-yard touchdown, his first as a Giant, which set the tone for the game.

*The touchdown marked the pinnacle of an 88-yard drive, the Giants’ longest since their 97-yard series against Washington on Dec. 18, 2022. This season, the Giants’ previous longest drive was an 80-yarder against Arizona.

*The touchdown also broke two significant streaks. The Giants had not scored an offensive touchdown since Matt Breida’s eight-yard run against San Francisco on Sept. 21. This resulted in a drought of 220 minutes and 42 seconds of game time, 14 quarters, 38 possessions, and 252 plays between offensive touchdowns.

The Giants had not thrown a touchdown pass since Jones and Isaiah Hodgins connected for an 11-yard score with 4:25 remaining in the victory against Arizona. This marked a lengthy gap of 260 minutes and seven seconds, 17 quarters, 44 possessions, and 291 plays between touchdown passes.

*Saquon Barkley delivered an exceptional performance, leading the Giants with 77 rushing yards on 21 carries. He also showcased his versatility with three receptions for 41 yards. Barkley’s notable contribution was a 32-yard catch-and-run for the Giants’ second touchdown in the second quarter. With this touchdown, Barkley now has three overall touchdowns, including two on receptions, both of which are team highs. This catch marked his longest since his 41-yarder against Green Bay in London on Oct. 9, 2022, and his longest touchdown reception since his impressive 54-yard score against New Orleans on Oct. 3, 2021.

*Linebacker Bobby Okereke continued his impressive performance, tying his season-high with 11 tackles, seven of which were solo. Okereke has led the Giants’ defense for the fourth consecutive game.

*The Giants demonstrated their adaptability on special teams by utilizing three punt returners. Rookie Eric Gray, who has primarily handled this duty, had one return and a fair catch before leaving the game due to a calf injury. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard stepped in and gained 10 yards on three returns, but unfortunately, he muffed a punt in the third quarter, leading to Washington’s only touchdown. Additionally, Darius Slayton, in his first-time punt returner role in his five-year career, made one fair catch.

*The Giants faced adversity on the offensive line with both starting offensive tackles unable to play. Left tackle Andrew Thomas missed his sixth consecutive game due to a hamstring injury suffered against Dallas on Sept. 10. Meanwhile, right tackle Evan Neal was sidelined with an ankle injury. Neal’s absence ended his streak of starting in the previous 12 regular season games, which had been the longest active streak among Giants players. Safety Jason Pinnock now holds that designation with eight consecutive starts.

A third starting lineman, rookie center John Michael Schmitz, missed his third consecutive game due to a shoulder injury.

The Giants had to rely on new additions to their offensive line. Justin Pugh started at left tackle and Tyre Phillips at right tackle. Notably, neither of them was on the roster until last week. Pugh was signed to the practice squad on Oct. 3, elevated to the roster for last week’s game in Buffalo, and officially signed to the roster on Wednesday. Phillips, on the other hand, was signed off the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad on Tuesday, and his start today marked his first action of the 2023 season. However, Phillips had played in 12 games for the Giants last year, including four starts at right tackle and one at left tackle.

Markus McKethan, who previously started four games at right guard and played as a reserve in Buffalo, took on the role of left guard. Meanwhile, Mark Glowinski started his third game of the season at right guard, having also started once on the left side.

*Cornerback Adoree’ Jackson missed his first game this season due to a neck injury he sustained last week in Buffalo. Jackson previously missed the final regular season game of the 2022 season with a knee injury. However, he made a strong return for the Giants’ playoff games.

Rookie Tre Hawkins stepped in as the replacement for Jackson. Although Hawkins started the season opener, he had only played 25 defensive snaps in the previous three games, compared to the 148 snaps he played in the first three games.

*Rookie safety Gervarrius Owens, the Giants’ seventh-round draft choice, made his highly anticipated NFL debut. After being inactive for the first six games, Owens finally had the opportunity to showcase his skills on the field.

The Giants’ inactive players for the game were quarterback Daniel Jones (neck), cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (neck), tackles Andrew Thomas (hamstring), Evan Neal (ankle), and Matt Peart (shoulder), center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), and defensive lineman Jordon Riley.
