DVD and Blu-ray discs are quickly becoming obsolete, joining the ranks of VHS tapes in the annals of technology.
CBS MoneyWatch was informed by Best Buy on Friday that they will cease the sale of physical movie media in stores and online by 2024, with the exception of the holiday season. Video games will still be available for purchase.
“It’s clear that the way we consume movies and TV shows has drastically changed over the years,” said a spokesperson for Best Buy. “By making this change, we can focus on offering our customers new and innovative technology for their exploration, discovery, and enjoyment.”

Last month, Netflix sent out its final DVD, marking the end of a service that the streaming giant originally launched in the late 1990s. At the time of its shutdown on September 29, less than 1 million people were still subscribed to Netflix’s DVD service. According to a survey conducted by Statista Consumer Insights, only 30% of Americans watched movies on discs in the past year.
Digital video discs emerged in the mid-90s as a new format for storing and watching movies, with the first DVD players debuting in Japan.
