Amidst the pandemic, she took the opportunity to engage in self-reflection and discovered a new facet of herself through cross dressing.
As a wrestler, she had skillfully transformed herself into a menacing figure, adopting a mask, growing chest hair, and maintaining a permanent scowl. This persona, she now refers to as “the enigmatic, dreadlocked guy” and a “brooding heel and villain.”
Initially, when she began cross dressing in 2020, she didn’t fully embrace it, potentially considering it a continuation of her role-playing endeavors. Ms. Tuft confessed, “Subconsciously, I may have justified my actions as a form of role play.” However, over time, she recognized her genuine identity as Gabbi, a part of her that yearned to be acknowledged.
Transitioning was not an easy process for her spouse, who continues to identify as a heterosexual woman. Ms. Tuft realized she had to confront a difficult decision: either transition and risk losing her marriage, or choose a path that could lead to suicide. In opting for the former, she was aware that her physical stature would ironically work against her.
She shared, “Some individuals would dismissively say, ‘You’re just a man in a wig.’ But they fail to understand that it’s a journey, my friend.”
In February 2021, she bravely announced her transgender identity on social media.
In an Instagram caption, she wrote, “This is the real me. I’m unapologetically and authentically myself. I’ve hidden this side of me in the shadows, fearful of societal judgment and the reactions of my family, friends, and followers.”
During her transition, she also shared heartwarming family photos featuring Ms. Tuft, her wife, and their daughter.
