NEW DELHI (AP) — The African Union has been added as a member of the Group of 20 top world economies during their annual summit in India. However, the summit was not without difficulties, particularly concerning the wording around Russia’s war in Ukraine. India succeeded in obtaining a final statement from the group, but only after toning down the language on the Ukraine issue. The final statement highlighted the negative impacts of the war, but avoided mentioning Russia’s invasion. In contrast, last year’s summit in Bali had explicitly condemned the war. While some consider the softened language a win for India, others see it as a compromise. Despite the challenges, the addition of the African Union to the G20 was widely supported and aligned with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agenda to empower the Global South. The summit also addressed other global issues, such as terrorism, cybersecurity, health, and water security. Attention was drawn to Russia’s actions in Ukraine, as it has impacted grain exports and food security. The G20 called for the resumption of grain shipments and urged an end to attacks on infrastructure related to grain exports. The G20 includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union, with Spain as a permanent guest. Russian President Vladimir Putin and China’s leader Xi Jinping did not attend this year’s summit.
