The Orange County Board of Supervisors has made a significant decision to address the issue of fentanyl abuse by approving funding for a range of innovative approaches.
Chairman Don Wagner, representing the district, has allocated $1.7 million from discretionary funds to enhance the sheriff’s department’s substance abuse prevention program called “Above the Influence.” As part of this program, a new sheriff’s deputy will be added to educate fifth- and sixth-graders about the dangers of substance abuse, including fentanyl.
Currently, the program has one sergeant and two deputies involved. However, Chairman Wagner aims to secure funding for an additional deputy for the next five years, costing the county $265,000.
In addition to the increased personnel, the funding will also be used to provide a new vehicle for the deputies to combat the transportation of illicit goods and drugs. Furthermore, investigators will receive new tools, and a new drug-sniffing dog will be acquired.
Sheriff Don Barnes expressed his gratitude for Chairman Wagner’s funding, stating, “Education and prevention are our most valuable resources in safeguarding our children from substance experimentation and substance use disorders. This funding allows us to expand this vital program and reach more students effectively.”
