Fulton County releases mug shot of Donald Trump

Former President Donald Trump’s booking photo was released on Thursday night by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office following his surrender to authorities on charges related to his alleged efforts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. This historic image marks the first time a mug shot has been taken of a former president.

Trump turned himself in at the Fulton County jail in Atlanta on Thursday evening. He was quickly processed and released on a $200,000 bond, just 30 minutes after arriving at the facility. Defendants are required to pay 10% of the bail amount, which in Trump’s case was $20,000, to ensure their appearance in court.

The date of Trump’s arraignment, where he will enter a plea, is unclear. However, District Attorney Fani Willis has suggested that all 19 people charged in the case involving the 2020 election will be arraigned during the week of September 5.

“We did nothing wrong at all,” said Trump to reporters at the Atlanta airport before returning to his residence in New Jersey. “And we have every right, every single right to challenge an election that we think is dishonest.” The former president called his criminal case in Fulton County a “travesty of justice.”

Trump also posted his mug shot to his X account (formerly known as Twitter) and Truth Social, accompanying the posts with the words “election interference” and “never surrender.” This was his first tweet since January 8, 2021, and his first since X owner Elon Musk reinstated his account in November 2022.

In addition to the $200,000 bond, Trump is prohibited from intimidating his 18 co-defendants or witnesses in the case, as well as obstructing the administration of justice. He is also forbidden from making any direct or indirect threats on social media against any co-defendant, witness, or alleged victim. Trump must communicate about the facts of the case solely through his attorneys.

This is Trump’s fourth indictment this year, and the first to require a mug shot. He faces two federal prosecutions, but official photographs were used in those cases. Mug shots taken in the federal court system are not released. No booking photo was taken in New York, where Trump faces state charges, and even if one had been taken, it would not be publicly released due to New York law.

Trump has entered not guilty pleas in all three earlier cases and has claimed that his prosecutions are politically motivated.

A grand jury in Fulton County returned a sprawling 41-count indictment charging Trump and 18 others on August 14. Prosecutors allege that the former president and his associates engaged in a criminal enterprise aimed at reversing Trump’s electoral loss in Georgia’s 2020 presidential election.

Trump has been specifically charged with 13 counts, including an alleged violation of Georgia’s racketeering law, making false statements and writings, and conspiring to commit forgery in relation to an alleged plot to replace duly elected presidential electors. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and accused the case brought by District Attorney Willis of being a “witch hunt” aimed at damaging his 2024 presidential campaign.
