Declan Nerney Reflects on His Hall of Fame Induction and Family Influence
The legendary Irish performer, Declan Nerney, was recently inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on The Late Late Show. Nerney also expressed his admiration for Patrick Kielty’s hosting of the country special. Additionally, he shared his gratitude for The 2 Johnnies, who introduced him to a new generation of fans after his guest appearances on their shows last year.
During an interview with Sunday World, Nerney spoke proudly of his niece, Una Healy, who turned 42. Nerney mentioned that Una was inspired by him and developed a passion for performing. He admitted that he never anticipated her success, but was impressed by her performance with The Saturdays at Dublin’s 3Arena. Nerney remarked that he was proud to see Una achieve her goals and praised her ability to meet the expectations of being in the limelight.
Nerney, who hails from Drumlish, Co Longford, now joins the ranks of Irish country legends in the Hall of Fame, alongside his inspirations, Big Tom and Philomena Begley. Reflecting on his early experiences, Nerney reminisced about watching Big Tom perform in his hometown when he was just a young boy. The sight of the band on stage, dressed in matching suits and playing electric guitars, left a lasting impression on him.
In the beginning, Nerney started his career as a guitarist for the renowned Gene Stuart and Brian Coll. He revealed that he never aspired to be a singing star; being a guitarist in a band was his ultimate dream. He felt content and honored to play alongside Brian Coll for 15 to 20 years.
However, fate had other plans for Nerney. Four decades after seeing Big Tom perform, he had the opportunity to share the stage with him in 2016 at the same venue. Nerney described the overwhelming excitement and adoration that filled the air that night.
Nerney’s music has become a significant part of many young people’s lives throughout Ireland. One example includes The 2 Johnnies, Johnny McMahon and Johnny O’Brien, from Tipperary. They grew up listening to Nerney’s songs on their local radio station. Performing on their show for a new generation brought Nerney immense joy and satisfaction.
Declan Nerney kicked off the Late Late Show country music special with an impressive viewership of 548,000 people watching live and an additional 53,000 streaming on RTE Player over the weekend. Nerney commended Patrick Kielty on a job well done and expressed his support for Ryan Tubridy, hoping he receives more positive recognition for his work.
