A freight train driver recently shared a heartwarming story of how he rescued a frightened pug who had strayed near the railway tracks. The brave driver, Michael Jones, was able to reunite the scared pup, named Poppy, with her relieved owners. Poppy had run away from home in Rutland after being startled by a speeding car, and her owners, Dawn and Ian Bain, spent a sleepless night searching for her.
The following morning, Michael, with his keen eyes, spotted Poppy hiding in a hedge close to the railway track. He stopped the train, got out, and safely collected Poppy. Showing remarkable kindness, he let the pug sit on his knee while she enjoyed delicious crumpets during the journey back to Oakham.
Dawn expressed her gratitude, saying, “I have no idea how he spotted her. Michael and his wife Julia took care of her throughout the night.” Julia, in fact, contacted vets in Oakham to inquire if anyone had reported the missing pug. It turned out that Dawn had indeed reported Poppy missing, and Michael brought her back to Oakham on his next journey.
Michael shared his experience, explaining that he noticed Poppy near Langham Junction crossing, more than a mile away from where she had gone missing in Northgate. The red harness caught his eye, and he couldn’t resist stopping to help the lonely and trembling dog. After gathering Poppy, he brought her into his train’s cab, where she rode with him for about 20 minutes. He even made sure she had crumpets and water during the ride.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Bain went to Oakham signal box, hoping someone there had seen her dog. Eventually, arrangements were made for Poppy to be handed over to her, and Mrs. Bain waited on the platform for Michael to arrive. When the train pulled in, there was the kind-hearted driver, with Poppy sitting on his knee. Tears flowed from both Dawn and Michael as they were finally reunited.
Poppy is now back home, recovering from the ordeal, with her canine companion Tinker. Despite a bloodshot eye, she thankfully has no injuries. Michael believes that if he hadn’t spotted her, Poppy may have never been found, as the area where she was hiding was unlikely to be searched.
Dawn expressed her gratitude for Michael’s observant nature and his willingness to stop and rescue Poppy. Locals and animal lovers have praised his goodwill, with one person saying, “This restores your faith in humans,” and another hoping that Network Rail recognizes and acknowledges Michael and his wife for their kindness.
