John Kirby, the National Security Council’s strategic communications coordinator, defended the White House’s decision to withhold long-range missiles from Ukraine in an interview on Fox News. Republican senators had urged President Biden to send Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to assist Ukraine in their conflict with Russia. During the interview on “America’s Newsroom,” hosts Dana Perino and Bill Hemmer pressed Kirby on the lack of missile support.
Kirby responded, “Discussions about the ATACMS are still ongoing. They have not been ruled out.” The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, is currently visiting the United States and will meet with key leaders, including President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy has expressed concerns about providing further funding to Ukraine and plans to question Zelensky about the utilization of existing funds and their strategy for victory in the war.
Perino expressed her perception that Ukraine appears to be losing the war due to the slow progress. In response, Kirby emphasized that the U.S. and the rest of the world are providing significant support to Ukraine. Perino questioned why more assistance wasn’t being provided, to which Kirby reiterated that increased assistance is being given.
