The upcoming Champions Cup tournament is set to be a fierce battle, featuring 24 teams with eight from each of the URC, Top 14, and Premiership leagues. The tournament will culminate at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on May 25th. The clubs will be divided into four pools of six, including Tier 1 clubs, Champions Cup winners La Rochelle, league champions Munster and Saracens, and the winners of the Top 14 final.
During the pool stage draw, each club will be drawn into a separate pool. If La Rochelle secures the Top 14 title this weekend, then Leinster will replace them in Tier 1. The remaining 20 clubs, known as Tier 2, will be drawn or allocated into the remaining pools, with limits of two clubs per league in each pool. Clubs from the same URC Shield will not be in the same pool, keeping the Irish qualifiers and South African teams apart.
Upon conclusion of the pool stage, the top four teams from each pool will advance to the round of 16, while the fifth-ranked team from each pool will enter the Challenge Cup knockout stage. The pool draws for the 2023/24 tournament will occur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on June 21st.
EPCR Chairman, Dominic McKay, voiced his excitement about the tournament’s new format, stating that they have created the right competition structures for players, clubs, and supporters, with the objective of engaging and enthralling audiences. The Champions Cup and Challenge Cup tournaments are the epitome of professional club rugby and must continue to improve and entertain fans, clubs, and partners alike.
The 2023/24 Champions Cup qualifiers include Munster, Stormers, Leinster, Ulster, Glasgow Warriors, Bulls, Connacht, Cardiff Rugby from the URC; La Rochelle, Toulouse, Racing 92, Bordeaux-Bègles, Lyon, Stade Francais, Toulon, Bayonne from the Top 14; and Saracens, Sale Sharks, Leicester Tigers, Northampton Saints, Harlequins, Exeter Chiefs, Bath, Bristol Bears from the Premiership. The Champions Cup weekend schedule is set, with the final round taking place on May 25th, 2024, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
