Prosecutors have informed lawyers for Donald Trump that an indictment against the former president is expected in connection with his efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 election, according to a report from NBC News.

Trump’s lawyers, Todd Blanche and John Lauro, met with prosecutors for Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith in Washington, D.C. on Thursday morning and were informed of the planned indictment.

Later, Trump took to social media to write, “My attorneys had a productive meeting with the DOJ this morning, explaining in detail that I did nothing wrong, was advised by many lawyers, and that an indictment of me would only further destroy our country.”

Trump added, “No indication of notice was given during the meeting – Do not trust the Fake News on anything!” on his Truth Social account.

A spokesman for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, Steven Cheung, denied the NBC report.

Jack Smith is overseeing the Justice Department’s criminal probe of Trump and his allies regarding their attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 election through false claims of widespread ballot fraud.

Last week, Trump revealed that Smith had informed his lawyers that he was a criminal target of the investigation and offered him a four-day window to testify before the grand jury. Trump declined the offer, stating that such notifications usually occur before an indictment.

On Wednesday, Trump expressed his willingness to testify if he is indicted, saying, “We’ll have fun on the stand with all of these people that say the Presidential Election wasn’t Rigged and Stollen,” on his social media site.

Trump Save America, a joint fundraising committee, sent out an email for the second consecutive day mentioning his potential indictment.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Smith, declined to comment on Thursday.

As for the Mar-a-Lago indictment, where Trump is facing several dozen criminal counts related to classified government documents, he has pleaded not guilty and the trial is scheduled for next year.

Trump has accused Smith and the DOJ of targeting him to harm his chances of winning the 2024 Republican presidential nomination and defeating Biden.
