The trial of a former Florida school resource officer who chose to remain outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during a deadly mass shooting started on Wednesday with opening statements. Scot Peterson, a former deputy for the Broward Sheriff’s Office, is facing 11 charges after failing to take action when a shooting occurred inside the school on February 14, 2018. Fourteen students and three staff members were killed, while 15 others were injured. Peterson, who claimed he didn’t enter the building because he didn’t know where the gunfire was coming from, faces seven counts of felony child neglect for the four students who lost their lives. During his opening statement, prosecutor Steven Klinger told jurors that Peterson took a position in an alcove between two of the school buildings and remained there until the shooting stopped. He shouted at one point during the incident, telling other officers to stay away. In his defense, Peterson’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, claimed that the former officer was not a coward and that the blame for the murders should be placed solely on the shooter.
