The front office also faced challenges in finding a solution at the quarterback position, bringing back veteran quarterback Cam Newton for a second stint with the franchise late in the 2021 season.
Looking ahead to his time at Nebraska, Rhule expressed confidence in building a national powerhouse and being relevant in the College Football Playoff’s new 12-team format.
The Panthers replaced Rhule with interim coach Steve Wilks, who now serves as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. In January, Panthers owner David Tepper introduced Frank Reich as the franchise’s next head coach.
The Panthers also made a big move by trading with the Chicago Bears to secure the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. With that pick, they selected quarterback Bryce Young.
