Former Minneapolis police officer convicted of George Floyd’s murder reportedly stabbed in prison

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of George Floyd’s murder, was reportedly seriously injured in a prison stabbing on Friday. According to a law enforcement source familiar with the case, Chauvin was at the medium-security Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson when the attack occurred. The Federal Bureau of Prisons did not confirm Chauvin as the victim of the attack but provided some details, stating that the victim was hospitalized. The incident took place at approximately 12:30 p.m., and employees responded with life-saving measures for an incarcerated individual. The patient’s current condition is not known.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison expressed sadness at the news of the incident, stating that Derek Chauvin, as a duly convicted individual, should be able to serve his sentence without fear of violence or retaliation. Chauvin, Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane, all officers during George Floyd’s fatal arrest in 2020, have been convicted in both state and federal courts for crimes associated with Floyd’s death. Chauvin is currently serving a 21-year federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights and a 22½-year state sentence for second-degree murder.
