In a Torrance Superior Court lawsuit filed on Thursday, an unidentified man referred to as John Doe 7091 is suing the El Segundo Unified School District for alleged sexual abuse that took place over 20 years ago. The abuse reportedly occurred while he was in middle school, including during a school trip to Washington, D.C. The lawsuit accuses the district of sexual battery, harassment, negligence, and negligent supervision and retention, and seeks unspecified damages. The suit argues that the ESUSD is responsible for the well-being of its students and should have properly supervised its employees, including the accused teacher.
The ESUSD released a statement on Monday in response to the lawsuit. The statement acknowledges the pending lawsuit and states that the district takes all allegations of misconduct seriously. However, due to the ongoing legal matter and involvement of a district employee, specific details or comments cannot be provided.
The plaintiff, identified as John Doe 7091, began attending El Segundo Middle School in 2000-2001. During that time, he met one of his social studies teachers while attending school meetings in preparation for a school-sponsored trip to Washington, D.C., according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit alleges that although Doe was not assigned to the teacher’s class, she showed a special interest in him during the meetings and began corresponding with him through emails. As their relationship developed, she engaged in flirtatious conversations and encouraged explicit sexual discussions, claiming that Doe was the most mature student at El Segundo Middle School. Additionally, she consistently urged him not to disclose their interactions, according to the suit.
During the trip to Washington, D.C., the teacher intentionally changed the seating arrangement on the plane to be seated next to Doe. The suit alleges that she sexually assaulted him on multiple occasions while they were in the nation’s capital. The abuse also took place in the teacher’s classroom, car, and Hermosa Beach apartment. At the end of the school year, she even left a love message for Doe in his yearbook, according to the lawsuit.
Due to the rumors surrounding his relationship with the teacher, Doe eventually transferred to another school district. However, the sexual abuse continued through the spring and summer of 2003, as stated in the lawsuit.
