A former attorney for the Mar-a-Lago ex-employee who turned against former President Trump has provided more details about the alleged incident. Yuscil Taveras, the former head of IT at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, has reached an agreement to testify as a witness in the case against Trump for mishandling classified documents, according to a court filing from Taveras’ former attorney. In return for his testimony, Taveras, referred to as “Trump Employee 4,” will be granted immunity from prosecution. This revelation comes after Taveras described his alleged attempts to delete security footage at the estate, as reported by Reuters.
According to the same document, special counsel Jack Smith had previously threatened to prosecute Taveras for lying to a grand jury. However, Taveras changed his statement after hiring a new lawyer and implicated Trump and two co-defendants, valet Walt Nauta and club maintenance chief Carlos De Oliveira. Taveras claimed that De Oliveira had told him to delete the security footage, allegedly on Trump’s orders. As a result of this new testimony, Trump, Nauta, and De Oliveira faced additional charges in a superseding indictment filed in July, as reported by CNN.
There has been no comment from the special counsel’s office or Taveras’ current lawyer regarding the recent developments. However, Taveras’ former lawyer, Stanley Woodward, who wrote the court filing, currently represents Nauta. This could potentially raise concerns about a conflict of interest if Woodward has to cross-examine his former client. A hearing on this issue is expected to be held by US District Judge Aileen Cannon. In the court filing, Woodward questioned the propriety of the agreement, suggesting that Taveras only provided new testimony to the grand jury after being offered immunity from prosecution, according to Reuters.
