Former Consultant Labels OceanGate’s Engineering Approach as ‘Inappropriate’

  • A former consultant for OceanGate criticized the company’s engineering as “ad-hoc” and “ultimately inappropriate.”
  • Rob McCallum expressed disappointment in comparing the sub industry with OceanGate’s Titan, stating it’s like comparing a “home-built go-kart with a Formula 1 car.”

A former consultant to OceanGate criticized the company’s engineering approach as “ad hoc” and “ultimately inappropriate.”

Rob McCallum, in an interview with Insider, stated that the Titan submersible stands out as the only non-certified vehicle operating commercially.

According to McCallum, comparing Titan to the commercial fleet is akin to comparing a homemade go-kart with a Formula 1 car, emphasizing the significant differences in engineering standards.

The former consultant, who has an extensive background in deep-sea exploration, expressed sadness that a sector with an impeccable safety record is now being associated with a “home-built” sub like Titan.

McCallum stated, “This disaster reinforces the industry’s longstanding approach. It has become evident that OceanGate’s ad-hoc and inappropriate engineering practices need serious reflection from the individuals who enabled that culture.”

He further emphasized the industry’s safety track record and the absence of fatal incidents in the past 70 years, illustrating the validity of commercial submersible expeditions.

McCallum, the founder of tour operator Eyos Expeditions, previously warned OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush about the dangers of using a non-classed sub in 2018, but his concerns were dismissed.

The recent Titan disaster validates the industry’s reliance on classed vehicles, according to McCallum.

On June 18, the Titan sub was reported missing, and the US Coast Guard confirmed the deaths of all five passengers on board after locating debris on the ocean floor consistent with a pressure chamber implosion.

At the time of writing, OceanGate has not responded to Insider’s request for comment.
