Ford Canada Employees Facing Obstacles Leading up to Critical Strike Deadline

Ford Workers in Canada May Strike as Negotiations with Union Remain Contentious

Sept. 17 (UPI)

Workers at Ford in Canada are facing the possibility of a strike as the automaker and the union representing its employees, Unifor, continue to be at odds over wages and other important issues. The current collective bargaining agreement between Ford and Unifor is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, according to a report from CBC.

“If I was to summarize the status of talks with Ford right now, I would say things are moving, but we are certainly not there yet,” said Lana Payne, President of Unifor, describing the negotiations with Ford.

Unifor has rejected two offers from Ford thus far. The union is seeking improved pensions, higher wages, investment options, and support for the shift towards electric vehicles. Ford’s only assembly plant in Canada is located in Oakville, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto, where Unifor represents 3,400 members. The plant is responsible for assembling the Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus. Additionally, there are two Ford engine plants in Windsor, Ontario, employing 1,700 Unifor members.

The potential strike of Ford workers in Canada would coincide with a strike by members of the United Auto Workers from Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler parent company Stellantis in the United States.

“Talks have continued to progress since Unifor’s last information session at both master and local tables. However, at this late stage in the negotiations, the union and the company remain far apart,” Unifor stated in a press release on Sunday. “As the deadline approaches, Unifor members at Ford Motor Company are advised to be prepared for all scenarios, including strike action. All Unifor members are required to report for their regularly scheduled shift unless otherwise directed by union officials.”
