Fontana Police Fatally Shoot Off-Duty LA County Sheriff’s Deputy

An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was tragically shot and killed by police on a golf course in Fontana, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department expressed deep sadness over the incident in a statement, stating, “We are in close communication with the Fontana Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department as they continue their investigation. This is an incredibly difficult situation for the family, our personnel, and the officers involved.”

At this time, the identity of the deceased deputy has not been released.

According to KTLA5, the incident began when authorities received a 911 call reporting a dispute involving a man at a nearby home. The man, who was described as distraught and intoxicated, allegedly fired shots into a wall before leaving the residence. The caller then reported that the man had proceeded to the golf course while carrying two firearms. Witnesses recounted hearing multiple gunshots as the man walked onto the course, prompting fear among golfers and resulting in a response from law enforcement.

Neighbor Myesha Dowe shared her account of the incident, saying, “He just started shooting, scaring everyone. He even shot at the police. It’s clear that he was dealing with mental health issues. He lost control and began shooting indiscriminately in the neighborhood.”

Upon confrontation with police, the man, later identified as an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy, was shot. He was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead. It is still unclear whether the suspect discharged his firearm on the golf course or if any shots were fired at the officers. The investigation is ongoing.
