Fobap executive says Pakistan shows strong interest in expanding trade with PH

Pakistan has expressed keen interest in expanding trade and investments in the Philippines. Ten of its largest textile and garments factories have committed to supplying textile and fabrics to local exporters, who heavily rely on imports. Robert M. Young, the trustee for the textile, yarn, and fabric sector of the Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc., shared this news after attending the Asean-Pakistan Business Opportunities Conference. The products include 100-percent cotton sheets and denim materials.

According to Young, garment exporters in the Philippines depend entirely on imported materials, as the country does not have its own textile industry. Pakistani goods are 15 to 20 percent cheaper compared to those from other countries due to lower average production costs. Pakistan also offers high-quality fabrics, thanks to its skilled workers and superior yarn quality, making it the second-best producer of cotton in the world.

In the past, Young had mentioned that many materials for producing garments, such as cotton sheeting, denim, polyester knitted fabric, buttons, threads, and lining materials, are imported. However, he expressed his desire to partner with Pakistani firms to serve underserved markets, especially in the high-end segment of the apparel sector.
