Florida Sells Mega Millions Ticket with the Third-Highest Jackpot

A single lucky ticket sold in Florida has won the third-largest lottery jackpot in US history during Tuesday’s Mega Millions draw. The ticket holder will have the option to either receive the estimated $1.58 billion jackpot in 30 graduated payments over 29 years or take a lump sum payment of $783.3 million.

This Mega Millions jackpot is the largest ever recorded in the game’s history, which began in 1996 as The Big Game before being renamed Mega Millions in 2002. Only two Powerball drawings have had larger jackpots.

The winning numbers for Tuesday’s draw were 13, 19, 20, 32, 33, and the Mega number was 14.

Although seven tickets were sold with five matching numbers but without the Mega number, only one of these tickets, sold in Hilmar, California, had a prize worth $3,383,371.

While tickets with five numbers (excluding the Mega number) sold in other states are worth at least $1 million each, California law mandates that major lottery winnings be paid on a pari-mutuel basis. This means that the payout can be either more or less than $1 million.

Two lucky ticket holders from Florida and North Carolina, who used the Megaplier option, won $2 million each with five matching numbers (excluding the Mega number). The Megaplier multiplies any non-jackpot prize by the number drawn, and each player paid an additional $1 for this option.

Additionally, tickets with five matching numbers (excluding the Mega number) were sold in Texas, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, each worth $1 million.

The odds of matching all five numbers and the Mega number are 1 in 302,575,350, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association. The overall chance of winning a prize in the Mega Millions game is 1 in 24.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the US Virgin Islands.

The jackpot for the upcoming Friday’s drawing is $20 million.
