Florida secures control of College World Series bracket by defeating Oral Roberts

Hurston Waldrep displayed his pitching prowess by striking out 12 batters in six innings, while the Florida baseball team showcased their power with three home runs in the first four innings to secure a four-run lead against Oral Roberts. However, the game took an interesting turn at the College World Series.

Despite the Gators’ 5-4 victory, they had to overcome several challenges. ORU’s Matt Hogan delivered an inside-the-park home run that brought them within two runs. In the eighth inning, ORU’s closer was forced to exit the game due to a mound visit rules violation with the bases loaded. Finally, ORU posed another threat in the ninth inning.

The Gators’ shortstop, Josh Rivera, described the recent games in the World Series as thrilling and intense. These games have been nail-biting, as five out of the first six games in the CWS history were decided by just one run.

ORU Coach Ryan Folmar acknowledged that the spectators in Omaha are truly getting their money’s worth with these exciting matches.

The Gators (52-15) will face the winner of the ORU vs. TCU elimination game on Wednesday. If necessary, Florida will have two chances to secure the one win required to advance to the best-of-three finals, set to begin on Saturday.

Despite being the first No. 4 regional seed to play in the CWS since 2012, the Summit League’s Golden Eagles (52-13) proved their resilience. However, they seemed outmatched against the second-ranked national seed Gators initially.

Everything changed in the seventh inning when Hogan drove a pitch from Ryan Slater off the left-field wall. Wyatt Langford, the center fielder, had trouble fielding the ball after it bounced off the wall. Hogan took advantage of the confusion and raced to third base. Rivera threw the ball to home plate, but Hogan slid in safely.

Hogan’s hit and display of hustle served as a turning point. Folmar highlighted the positive influence Hogan’s performance had on the team, and he referred to it as contagious.

In the eighth inning, the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs against Brandon Neely. Unfortunately, the Gators exceeded the mound visit limit, and Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan had to replace Neely. Cade Fisher took over and managed to get Justin Quinn to fly out, preventing ORU from closing the gap.

O’Sullivan shouldered the blame for the violation but appreciated his team’s support. He apologized to the team after the game for his mistake.

Florida maintained their lead in the ninth inning, even after ORU scored on a groundout and had runners on the corners with two outs. Jacob Godman’s flyout sealed the victory for the Gators, prompting a joyous celebration from the dugout.

Despite allowing several baserunners, Waldrep (10-3) excelled, giving up only one run in his six innings on the mound. He relied on his pitching expertise to deliver crucial pitches when needed and achieved double-digit strikeouts for the third consecutive game.

Gollert (10-2), ORU’s starting pitcher, struggled throughout the game. Coming off two subpar outings prior to this match, Gollert couldn’t find his form. He allowed home runs to Ty Evans, Rivera, and Luke Heyman, resulting in a 5-1 deficit for his team.

Evans’ home run set a new record for the Gators, surpassing the record set by the 1998 team with a total of 133 home runs this season.

In the NCAA Tournament, Gollert has given up a total of seven home runs over three appearances, spanning 8 1/3 innings.
