Florida Man Breaks Record for Longest Duration Living Underwater

A university professor made history this weekend by breaking the record for the longest time living underwater without depressurization. Joseph Dituri, also known as “Dr. Deep Sea,” spent his 74th day in Jules’ Undersea Lodge, located at the bottom of a 30-foot-deep lagoon in Key Largo, Florida. Unlike previous attempts, the lodge does not use technology to adjust for the increased underwater pressure.

Dituri’s daily routine in the lodge remains consistent. He starts his day with a protein-rich meal of eggs and salmon, prepared using a microwave. He then proceeds to exercise with resistance bands, do his daily pushups, and takes an hour-long nap. His research at the lodge focuses on studying the physiological effects of long-term exposure to extreme pressure on the human body.

The previous record of 73 days, two hours, and 34 minutes was held by two Tennessee professors who spent their time at the same location in 2014. However, Dituri intends to exceed this record and stay in the lodge until June 9, reaching a milestone of 100 days. This extended stay is part of his underwater mission known as Project Neptune 100.

Aside from his research, Dituri is also committed to educating and raising awareness about the oceans. He conducts online classes and broadcast interviews from his digital studio beneath the sea, reaching over 2,500 students during his 74-day stay. He emphasizes the importance of preserving and treating the oceans well in order to sustain their population.

Living under the ocean has its challenges, and Dituri admits to missing one thing in particular: the sun. He recalls the significant role the sun played in his daily routine, stating that he usually went to the gym at five in the morning and watched the sunrise afterwards.

The overall mission combines medical and ocean research with educational outreach. It was organized by the Marine Resources Development Foundation, the owner of Jules’ Undersea Lodge. While Dituri acknowledges the significance of the record he has achieved, he emphasizes that there is still more science to be done.
