Monica Rodriguez, a councilwoman, has announced her third annual anonymous fireworks buyback program. This initiative aims to put a stop to the use of illegal fireworks.
Rodriguez emphasized the importance of residents understanding that fireworks are illegal in Los Angeles. They pose a significant risk to individuals who are unprepared to handle explosives, resulting in physical harm.
Not only do illegal fireworks harm people and animals, but they also contribute to air pollution and endanger communities in high fire hazard zones.
Rodriguez expressed her concern about the potential devastating impact on entire communities, stating that she does not want to evacuate neighborhoods due to thoughtless use of fireworks for momentary entertainment.
The buyback program was created as a responsible solution for reducing the use of illegal fireworks. Rodriguez held a press conference with LAPD Chief Michel Moore and LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley to promote the event, which will take place at Brand Park on Saturday at 9 a.m.
During the press conference, Moore and Crowley explained the disposal methods for illegal fireworks and advised on how to report them before the 4th of July weekend.
Rodriguez announced that the city will be offering rewards in exchange for turning in illegal fireworks. The rewards will vary based on the weight and type of fireworks surrendered and will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Possible rewards include Dodger tickets, Universal Studio tickets, and gas cards.
In addition to the buyback program, Rodriguez will also host a drone light show at Hansen Dam as an alternative way to celebrate the 4th of July without traditional fireworks. The show, synchronized with music, will feature approximately 500 drones and convey the theme “One Los Angeles,” highlighting what the city values most.
Furthermore, the festival accompanying the drone light show will include performances by Queen Nation, a Queen cover band, a DJ, and various food trucks.
Rodriguez’s efforts to address illegal fireworks include legislation that calls for a comprehensive plan. This legislation led to the establishment of the online fireworks portal, allowing residents to report illegal fireworks in their neighborhoods. It also resulted in the creation of the fireworks buyback program, which successfully collected and removed over half a ton of fireworks from the streets.
