A brush fire erupted on the edge of the Cahuilla Indian Reservation south of Aguanga on Thursday, consuming approximately 120 acres. The fire spread into the hills, with spot fires emerging ahead of the main blaze, posing additional challenges for firefighters.
The Riverside County Fire Department reported the non-injury “Bonny Fire” at around 2:50 p.m. The fire started in the vicinity of Bonny and Barber lanes.
In response to the fire, multiple engine and hand crews from various agencies, including the county and U.S. Forest Service, were dispatched to the remote location. The firefighters encountered moderate flames burning through medium vegetation, with scattered houses and outbuildings in the path of the fire.
To combat the blaze, six Cal Fire air tankers and three water-dropping helicopters made multiple runs. Their efforts successfully contained the left flank of the fire and reduced the threat to most structures.
However, the fire advanced beyond a road due to light winds, entering the hills and creating additional difficulties for ground personnel.
Firefighters also faced the challenge of spot fires breaking out outside the main fire. They relied on air support to help extinguish these spot fires.
As of 5:30 p.m., no evacuation warnings were issued.
The cause of the fire remained unknown at the time of reporting.
